Belonging: “Home is where I am.”

Early in my life, I learned that home is not a person, a place, or a piece of land. Home is my inner world. Home is my soul.

Yesterday was once again a beautiful evening of connection, inspiration, and belonging at the Dominicuskerk during Refugee Welcome Week.

Together with Sahar, co-ambassador and founder of Refugee Millennials and Azadi, we explored what belonging means. Sahar @s.shirzad hosted the evening with such grace, warmth, and compassion. It was an honour to share my thoughts, feelings, and experiences alongside the lovely storyteller and cultural organizer Sobhi Khatib.

What moved me most was seeing how many people in the audience resonated with our stories. There is something deeply empowering about bringing lived experiences, knowledge, and wisdom together. When we create a safe space where vulnerability and inner strength can coexist, meaningful connections emerge.

I am also grateful to everyone who joined us and to the incredible artists who added new layers to our understanding of belonging through their performances: Sunday Table by Rachelle Traboulsi, music by Al-Qadima Escole Trio @roua_jafar , and The Forgotten Stone. The amazing food by Zina’s Kitchen!

These evenings remind me that belonging is not about where we come from, but about how we connect, see one another, and create spaces where everyone feels welcome.

There is so much more to experience during Refugee Welcome Week. Take a look at the programme, join an event, and be part of the conversations and connections.

“Because belonging starts with being seen, heard, and welcomed exactly as you are.” ✨

You are invited. You are welcome. ❤️
